F is for Fantasy

When one talks about the merging of fantasy and the spanking and BDSM genre, one has to talk to the master. In this case, the master is Cara Bristol. I count myself fortunate enough to know this author. I talk to her upon occasion on Facebook and in other forums to which we both belong, and I’ve met her in real life at the RT Booklovers Conventions both last year and this one. So, speaking from experience I can honestly say, not only is she a very nice person, but when she came out with Breeder last year, she took the spanking world by storm.

Breeder was unique. Yes, authors had been writing sci-fi/fantasy spanking romances before she published this book, but what she did was bring a depth to her world that I simply hadn’t read before. Not from anybody, myself most certainly included, and she did it in a very smart way.

When you write completely alien worlds, you have a choice: you can either bog the pages down with a lot of technical jargon, names impossible to pronounce (just to show how alien they are), stopping the story every few pages to explain something the reader has never encountered so they don’t get lost…or, you start off not only expecting the reader to know exactly what you’re talking about at all times, but to assume they’ve also toured the alien planet at least once or twice before they pick your book up, and you just go with it. Cara Bristol did the latter, incorporating just enough description to keep the reader from getting lost, but in such a way that never once did the alien-ness jar you out of the story.

See, aliens! And now you're totally jarred.

See, aliens! And now you’re totally jarred.

Do you know what a ‘sudon’ is?

He unclipped the sudon from his belt. Crafted from the tail of the baronian ilyx, the stiff leather sudon bore the protrusions where the venomous quills had been removed. As he’d not needed to use it before, scant amounts of venom remained in the raised areas, which caused temporary but vicious stinging.

The breeder shrieked when he hauled her slight body over to the stone bench. He sat and yanked her over his lap, raising her buttocks into position. Despite his focus on correcting her behavior, he took notice of the roundness of her backside, plump for such a skinny female. her natural padding was fortunate. Though the whipping would hurt, it would not injure her.

He brought the sudon down hard on one cheek. She howled, and he smacked again, placing a dimpled red streak next to the first.

“You will not bite,” he said and marked the other side. “You will obey. You will follow Protocol.”

With precision and force, he welted her pale flesh. Her caterwauling drowned out the omnipresent din of the containment center. She flailed her arms and legs in an attempt to escape, but he hung on to her waist with one hand and continued to paddle.

By the time he’d decided her chastisement had been sufficient, her buttocks, marked by inflamed dots caused by the protrusions on the sudon, radiated heat and redness, and her body had gone limp across his lap, although she continued to sob.

He reattached the sudon to his belt…

So, do you know what a sudon is now? Yes, you do. It’s a leather-crafted spanking implement that stings your butt and hurts like hell, and not only will the breeder never bite again, but neither will you.

As it should be.

I was thrilled when Breeder came out last year. I disappeared into her world for what I thought would only be an hour or so before bed and the next thing I knew it was ‘The End’ and 3 a.m. At that point, I decided to just get up because no way I was going to be able to sleep with that story still rattling around in my head. Books that good ought to have warning labels!

I may or may not have sent an email to that effect, but did Ms. Bristol immediately stop what she was doing and fix that one, tiny flaw in what was otherwise the perfect spanking book? No, she did not. What did she do instead? She released a sequel: Terran.

She so much resembled a hissing feleen cub, Marlix would have laughed, except for the warming in his loins. In contrast to this Terran, Parseon breeders were meek creatures. He’d never taken a female who’d demonstrated as much fire as this one. What would it be like, he wondered? Would she claw at him, or would she submit?

Had she been a breeder, he would have been within his rights to shove her to the floor and find out. But the treaty prevented him from using Terran females in that manner, and Parseon faced enough problems without causing a diplomatic incident. But he did take full liberty to study again the softness of her skin, the length of her legs, and the points of her nipples tenting her uniform. She dressed like the people of her race, covering her entire torso. She did not bare the right side of her chest the way Parseon people did to reveal their insignia.

As unbelievable as it seemed, Terrans did not recognize status. They considered all people to be ‘equal’, one of many issues shaking an already uneasy alliance. Who could trust a race that lacked discernment?

A few hours ago, I tucked myself into bed for the night, cracked my Kindle and read those paragraphs…lol, and here we go again.

It’s now 5:27 a.m. In just under three hours, I’m supposed to go pick up the U-Haul and start moving. I blame Cara Bristol, although to her credit she does have a warning on it. It reads: Terran, the second book in the Breeder sci-fi series, is a “capture” romance involving a domineering but hunky alien, and a female with a bad dye job and an even worse attitude.

Yeah, it’s good, but it doesn’t quite say enough. Here’s my version:

WARNING! The following story includes hot spanking, hotter sex, a sassy heroine, and an alpha hero that will leave you panting for more in a completely dystopian setting that reads like flippin’ Pringles. Once you start, you just can’t stop.

After fleeing heartache on Terra, Tara Diehl has adjusted to male-dominated Parseon better than most until she is kidnapped by Alpha Marlix, a ruling commander. At first her tall, muscled abductor terrifies her, especially when he doesn’t hesitate to quell her struggle for freedom with some force. When her attempts to escape fail, she decides to seduce her way to freedom.

But out of seduction and subterfuge grow a true intimacy that cause Marlix and Tara to take action that drives Parseon to the brink of civil war, threatening not only their relationship, but also their lives.

To secure his legacy, Commander Dak, a ruling Alpha of planet Parseon, purchases Omra, a breeder slave. He intends to impregnate her, produce a son, and hand her off to his anointed beta partner. As Dak and Omra discover a sexual bliss banned by his world’s law, he begins to question the traditions and ways of his people, causing him to jeopardize his command and endanger the life of the woman he has come to love.

  1. This not a genre I usually enjoy reading. But when it comes to doms and spankings, I really love Cara’s work. Guess it’s just vanilla fantasy I don’ts like. Thanks for sharing
